Unveiling Sema Ceremony
The Mevlevi Sema Ceremony (also known as Whirling Dervishes) is an intricately woven spiritual ritual, imbued with layers of symbolism and mystical meaning from beginning to end. Each phase of the ceremony is tied to the Sufi concept of the purification of the self, often described as the “stations of the nafs” — the spiritual transformation of the ego into the soul's pure essence.
From the garments worn by the whirling dervishes (semazens) to the symbolic sheepskin (post) at the ceremonial space, every element in the ritual serves a deeper purpose. The tennure (white robe) signifies virtuous character, the hırka (cloak) represents overlooking the faults of others, while the sikke (felt hat) symbolizes liberation from the ego. These items are not mere costumes; they are vessels of spiritual teaching and transmission.
Throughout the ritual, these symbols and the deeper meanings of each movement are explained live by Sheikh M. Fatih Çıtlak, the head of the ceremony. This narrated format gives the program its name: "Meâlî Semâ"—a title that reflects both the meaning (meâl) and sublimity of the sema. This special presentation has become one of the most celebrated events of the ensemble, drawing thousands of attendees from Turkey and abroad.
More than a whirling performance, Meâlî Semâ offers audiences an experience of spiritual education, a transmission of refined manners (adab), and a glimpse into the language of a sacred civilization. In each revolution of the dervish, not only does the body turn, but the heart and mind deepen in remembrance and awareness. This is not a dance — it is a living prayer.
